The Eve of War

From the Chesham Town Council website -

"The World War One memorial commemorates the 188 Chesham men who fell between 1914 and 1918. The striking white Portland stone statue was designed by Arthur George Walker RA, who placed it such that the sun would shine on the soldier's face all day. The memorial is one of seven of a similar design, the others being located at Dartford, Heston, Hounslow, Ironbridge, Sevenoaks and Wolverhampton. Only the Chesham and Heston memorials are sculpted from stone, the others being cast in bronze. The statue was unveiled on the 14th July 1921".

I have taken this photograph of the statue on the eve of the "Chesham Remembers" WW1 Commemorations taking place between Saturday 2nd August and Monday 4th August, the date Britain declared war on Germany in 1914 following its invasion of Belgium. Here is another picture of the statue which I took when the weather was better on the previous evening.
