The Picton Clock, Wavertree, Liverpool

James Picton was an Architect and Councillor who campaigned for public libraries. After an Act of Parliament allowed for the raising of a 1 penny rate, Liverpool's first public library and museum was built in William Brown Street in 1860. A reading room was later added and named the Picton Reading room after James Picton who was the city's first chair of the libraries and museum committee. It still stands and is one of the city's most beautiful rooms. But meanwhile, as a response to the massive financial cuts imposed upon the city, there are now proposals to close 11 local libraries. James Picton would not have been amused- and nor are we.

The Picton clock was built in 1884 by James Picton as a monument to his wife. It stands at a roundabout which is also occupied by these public toilets. I don't think I would recommend the Ladies- from the looks of things you might never get out. They look as if they were closed before the libraries.
