Wood Mouse
A slight shift of a dry leave made me stop and watch. A Wood Mouse was climbing out of his hole and tried to drag a chestnut inside. Quite a piece of work: mouse and chestnut were approximately the same size. I guess he succeeded in the end, but I walked away because he noticed me and disappeared in his hole.
I've got a soft spot for wood mice, although they are considered vermin. I mean, almost every other creature in the woods is after them... What a life, but here I am, projecting again.
I also enjoy Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge series. The illustration's are so delightful! In fact I love them so much, I'm still using the tea things...
