Holocaust Memorial

This is one of the memories of Budapest that will stay with me forever. The Shoes on the Danube Promenade is a memorial to the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes and coats, which had been earmarked for reuse by German civilians, before they were shot at the edge of the river so that their bodies fell into the Danube and were carried away. The memorial consists of 60 pairs of shoes, cast in bronze, representing the shoes left behind on the bank. It is so moving.
