Lake Tekapo Snow
Finally a day without rain. Brilliant :)
Really worth looking large
We were up late, bacon and eggs for breakfast then decided to go to Fairlie (inland about 35minute drive). Lots of snow on the mountains looking really stunning with the sun shining on them. As we got towards Fairlie the snow was building up along the roadsides from the snow ploughs.
Because of the beauty all around, we were tempted to travel even further to Lake Tekapo and so pleased we did. The drive up through Burkes Pass was brilliant but not many photo opportunities available. The snow ploughs had pushed the snow very high on either side of the roads leaving very few places to stop. Doug was very good at accommodating my need for photography and we did manage quite a few.
Incredible amounts of snow everywhere, fences completely covered. I am worried about the stock and hope most are OK but even on the flats it is half metre or more deep. Cars with half a metre of snow on them almost buried in some places. Once we got to Tekapo it was very evident of the extent of this storm. Verandas broken, shops shut, cars stuck, roads impassable etc.
As we drove, I spoke to Doug about snow raking to get stock down off the hills, then heard on the TV news tonight that they are calling on volunteers to help with this. Nothing is thawing as yet. It is very very grim for farmers - the only ones that are smiling are the ski field operators.
Some more images if you care..... - all images are taken from the road as just too difficult go off road.
