The road to Halti
After learning the Finnish word for avalanche and safely passing through avalanche corner we got our first sight of target number one: Halti, or rather the part of Halti that forms the highest point in Finland.
Firstly the avalanche passage - easily spotted from the amount of debris at the bottom of the narrow valley. Assessment was that all the snow had come down thus safe to follow the ski skooter tracks over the debris. We split up and didn't stop until we were out of the narrow section though.
Ski Skooters are allowed in certain areas in Finland. In particular the 50kms or so from Kilpis to the summit of their mountain. Hence the nice piste to follow. As we proceeded towards the hut we saw a skooter towing trailers full of people covered in reindeer fur to keep them warm. On reading the hut book it was clear they had stopped for a brew and the Jai Hind and Namastes they had written showed them to be Indian.
Longshank's version:
From the UK middle classes
a few of us get off our asses,
Veitch's corner shop has been realised
to pay for him to get on the ice,
Johny Irish put his job on hold
to explore toilets in the cold,
The men in suits have traded the city
to find a place thats pure not shitty,
To break the commute from Perth to Tewin
Graeme prefers to fall over somewhere its Snowin',
Nevis Mick's put on his pulk pulling mits
and called a halt to his career lifting tits,
Kathy's life is such a palaver
she's gone in search of lumivyorivara,
I've got a clause in my contract
that gets me to places where the water is compact,
So goodbye home counties and "air, hair, lair"
to the hood with all the sno
