Miles Thompson

Today's the day ........................... to look up

Actually, you wouldn't want to look up here today because it's pouring with rain - but if you did at No 21 Beast Banks, you would see this little figure. He is Miles Thompson, an architect, born in Kendal in 1808.

At the age of 17 he began work as a draughtsman for the local firm of architects Francis & George Webster - eventually taking it over himself in 1846. He designed many public and domestic buildings in Kendal including the old Market Hall, the Almshouses at Sandes Hospital and the Public Washhouses and Baths.

He is particularly associated with the nearby buildings of Collin Croft and with the houses on Beast Banks. This little of statue of him holding an architect's drawing was placed on the gable of No 21 by his brother Robert ....................
