Stinking hellebore

Today's the day ............................... to be misunderstood

How unfair that this unusual native perennial plant, with its delicate light green bell-shaped flowers edged with purple should be known as Stinking Hellebore.

It gets its name from the slightly unpleasant smell given off by the lower leaves when damaged or crushed. The flowers however give off a particularly pleasant sweet scent and because they are around in the garden from January on, they are very popular with early insects.
