NZ Weta
We are on the West Coast of the South Island in the area of Lake Brunner, and we came here to look for and photograph fungi. My friend was on the ground photographing a lovely blue fungi, when she saw something crawl in to her camera bag that had it's lid open. She called me for help. Low and behold it was a NZ Weta.
I had never seen one before in its natural world. Carefully lifted it out, and in actual fact it clings to you with its spiked legs, but does not hurt at all. It is a harmless insect, and can only be found in NZ, and it has outlived the dinosaurs.
We had such a lovely day with all the things that we found and saw, but this topped the list.
