Cross Me A River

The oldest of the four bridges pictured here crossing the Tyne is the green painted Tyne Bridge, built relatively recently in 1928, it is perhaps the most iconic of the five bridges at this point on the river connecting Gateshead and Newcastle. Or should that be Newcastle and Gateshead? That may depend on which side of the river you are standing.

The double tier High Level bridge was built in 1849 and carries the railway on one deck and the road on the lower deck.

The red and white bridge that you can see is the Swing Bridge which was built in 1876 while the blue bridge in the background is the Metro Bridge built 105 years later.

Just behind where I was standing when I took this photograph is the Gateshead Millennium bridge which carries pedestrians and cyclists.
