Inside the dome

Today, under the pretext of showing round some donors, I got to visit our construction site for the new Music Building from the inside. This is a fascinating project from many points of view - civil engineering, matching a modern build to adjacent Grade II listed buildings, a uniquely equipped concert hall, creating a building which is environmentally 21st century but has to match 19th century neighbours, etc etc. To be able to go inside while it's in construction really is awesome, particularly if you find structural processes interesting (which I do).

So here is the inside of the dome, the outside of which has featured in earlier blips (this one shows its framework and going way back, this its steel foundation). It's the largest dome to be constructed in this country for 30 years. When finished it will be lead covered to match the other domes on campus, which in itself is quite interesting as lead specialists are few and far between. On the inside, this will be a large rehearsal room with beautiful natural light and amazing acoustics. Can't wait for the opening ....!
