TRUSSED ROOF - Chapter 1
If you have a newish house chances are you have a trussed rafter roof. It's worked out by computer what the thinnest, shortest possible bits of wood you can get away with and how they can be braced to make up for the lack of timber, hence the W shape of the truss and the wee metal plates you see on the joists which hold the joints.
To convert this roof into a usable space, we have had to fit two 800mm hign beams running down the entire length of the building which sit into the wall. A new floor is then hung from these beams. What we've done so far is bolt 4 X 2's onto the existing trusses to give them some support before we start cutting out too many supports, we've also fitted 3 top hung veluxes which are well smart, the guy will see over to Fife from the comfort of his bed.
So far so good, except that I put my foot through the guys ceiling..
