Haig
This is the rear end of the statue of Douglas Haig the British World War I military commander who sent thousands and thousands of young men "over the top" in the battles of the Somme and Ypres. A pretty bloody time.
Although he is seen as a horror figure by many, the troops at the time held him in great admiration and I bet all those deaths weighed heavily on him. After the war he campaigned tirelessly for the welfare ex-servicemen.
In the bright blue crisp winter day in Edinburgh it made me reflect about the conflict in Gaza half a world away. A completely different war and a completely different world, but it made me think we all need to do everything we can to stop these things happening again.
