Plus ça change...

I'm not really brave enough for street blips - maybe I need to borrow my daughter's compact more often: the DSLR does feel a bit obtrusive. But, half hidden behind a windbreak, I felt bold enough to try out a few shots on Gullane beach. I quite liked this elegant couple, taking a post-lunch stroll.

Katherine's sports day this morning which was quite entertaining. As always, Katherine's house was careful, accurate, stuck to all the rules, and came third out of four. As usual the house which always runs things a bit beyond the rules (some of them were holding on to the eggs in the egg and spoon!) won. But, everyone had fun and, as seems to be the way with sport in schools round this neck of the woods, individual achievement was ignored in the interests of the team.

So whilst non of these kids will have the bad experience of dreading sports day every year for the ritual humiliation of coming last, it also denies non-academic sporty kids their chance to shine. And all of this is not helped by the woeful amount of sport done in our school (don't know if it's the same in all schools around here - may just be ours).

I can't help but think that all this sports day teaches sporty kids is that there's no point trying to be great because the other idiots on your team will let you down Meanwhile the non-sporty kids just learn that you can still win even if you're no good at all - providing you're in the right team. But then again perhaps that's the kind of lesson for life it's as well learning good and early!
