Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

Upside Down Drumming at Wahoo's Tacos

Today was my first day back at the campus since right after graduation on June 11. I usually sign-up to work two weeks in the Writing Center during the summer school session (and during the winter session). This is Week 3 of summer school. I work a shift of 8:00-5:30 and if I put my 15 minute morning break with my afternoon break and my half hour lunch -- I get an hour out from 12:00-1:00. It's easy work and extra pay. But I'd rather play, so I had to pep-talk myself on the way there. It was actually a very pleasant day.

So when I arrived home moments after 5:30 this evening, I thought Mr. Fun would have dinner ready, but I immediately realized there was no aroma of dinner wafting through the house. Mr. Fun spent a good portion of his day off learning the new toy, I mean music device, that he purchased the other day. It's a turntable that will allow him to convert his LPs to digital.

I haven't counted our LPs, but it's in the hundreds . . . The Beatles, the Beach Boys, America, Bach, Bob Dylan, Carole King, Chicago, Cream, Dave Brubeck, Donovan, George Winston, Indigo Girls, Jack Johnson, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, John Klemmer, John Mayall, John Mayer, Kenny Loggins, Kenny Rogers, Kingston Trio, The Mamas & the Papas, Mark Almond, Neil Sedaka, Norah Jones, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Righteous Brothers, Sam Cooke, Santo & Johnny, Sara Groves, Simon & Garfunkel . . . that's just to name a few. We also have lots of easy listening music, classical, Christian rock, some country, and on and on the list goes. So getting LPs to digital is important.

I wasn't very worried about dinner. For me eating is a social event--it's not so much about the food; it's about the moment and nurturing a relationship with whoever I am eating with. For Mr. Fun, eating is a past-time; it can be done at every waking moment; it's a necessity; it's a race. He's always done eating as I'm just about getting started. He was raised by a mom who remembered living in poverty without enough food, so she taught her kids to eat.

So eventually Mr. Fun put the tunes away and came downstairs and wanted to know what we should do for dinner. So a fairly inexpensive place with somewhat healthy food is Wahoo's Tacos. Wahoo's is a chain restaurant almost fast food type place. The inside of the place is plastered with decals, skateboards, surfboards, snowboards and the one closest to us has this set of drums hanging from the ceiling. They belong to Travis Barker who is the drummer for Blink 182. We don't have any of their music. We've been told he has actually played those drums from that position (if you look carefully, you can see the straps to hold him in upside down).

So this day has been all about back to the campus, LPs to digital, and tacos. We're now about to enjoy a few minutes in the spa wrapping-up this Monday and watching the almost full moon over Southern California.

Thanks for all the comments about soundtracks and playlists on yesterday's blip. It's apparent that everyone has a softspot for some kind of music.

Good night,
Rosie (& Mr. Fun), aka Carol
