Reflected color
A great day today. This morning I was down at UC (University of Cincinnati) for my music 'class'. It's not so much a class as a gathering of people who love classical music, getting together to enjoy listening to music together. Today we were listening to and watching some video clips of the astonishingly gifted young Venezuelan conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who at the age of only 28 has become conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He is a product of the humanitarian campaign known as El Sistema, established in Venezuela by José Antonio Abreu with the aim of involving youngsters from poor families in the playing of music, getting them off the streets and giving them something to aspire to in a climate where drugs, disillusionment and crime are rampant. He is amazing to watch - so energetic and enthusiastic. Today's blip is taken on the campus, with residence dorms and Fall foliage reflected in the windows of the Recreation Center.
On my way home I did grocery shopping, then the rest of the afternoon I was at home. I fixed a fairly early dinner, as we were out this evening at an astounding concert at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral in downtown Cincinnati, featuring the English chamber choir Tenebrae. To quote from their website, "often performing by candlelight, the choir creates an atmosphere of spiritual and musical reflection, where medieval chant and renaissance works are interspersed with contemporary works. The carefully selected team of singers uses the acoustic and atmosphere of the building to enable the audience to experience the power and intimacy of the human voice at its best." They certainly lived up to this, performing in dimmed lighting (unfortunately not candlelight) and often singing from the back of the church and at times split into different groups around the audience. It was amazing! We have heard numerous concerts at St. Peter in Chains which has excellent acoustics, including Kings College, the Kings Singers and Chanticleer, but to my mind Tenebrae truly maximized the setting.
