Hideaway
Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Titch 1966
First campsite south west of Windhoek had this wee platform with a view to a wee waterhole where we saw - wait for it - a horse! Later a gang of mental warthog nearly decided to come on down but in the end just mooched around too far away, shame really as they were one gang of only two we saw the whole time.
First night in the tent was quite an eye opener for me, by Timothy it's LOUD sleeping out there in the night! right enough some of the loud was from Britishus homosnorerous but over the nights we learned to identify the nocturnal voices of lions (v similar to snorers really), zebra (a lot like a small terrier wanting in the back door), hyenna and hunners of early morning birds. I was cold and stiff through the night and woke up doing mental compare and contrast with August's week in Phomn Penh Raffles lol, but apart from a couple of nights when it rained like buggery and everything got soaked, the whole camping thing was a great experience and I'm very glad I did it. For the record this will NOT lead to further camping in either a) rainy seasons or b) outwith the tropics!
