Must see No.7

Ok, this will have to be part A of a subset tour - "The heart of Neolithic Orkney" as it's too big to do in one blip. These are the Stones of Stenness.

(Apologies in advance to any historians/archaeologists out there for any errors, mine is a purely laypersons point of view.)

You are probably unaware of this if you have never set foot in these isles but Orkney has been the centre of the universe for a very long time. Remains of Mesolithic, Neolithic, pretty much you name an 'ithic' and we've been through it. Not to mention the modern stuff... bronze age, iron age, pictish, viking blah, blah, blah. The place is covered in tombs, cysts, stone circles and things that we have no idea what they are.

I suggest if you'd like to know more about the Stones of Stenness and the World Heritage site that you have a rummage in Sigurd's site as he knows a lot more than me and there are some pictures of the stones in the sunshine.

I must confess the stones didn't look anything like this in my original pic. I had a bit of time to kill this evening and there was a very atmospheric haar rolling around so I headed out to the stones thinking I would get a nice moody picture. However, Stenness must have been the only place the mist wasn't thick on the ground and all I got was flat grey skies. So I messed about with this one to get something that more reflects the drama of the stones.
