It's a funny old game.....
.....our troop entered a team in the Leith District Scouts Five-a-side football competition at Meadowbank tonight, fielding a mixed team in every game (the only troop to do so, with many fielding all-male teams). After recording three closely fought draws and a win in a league format, we were matched against our nemesis, the 6th Leith (Newhaven), in the last match. We've only beaten them once in 10 years.
In a tense game where we had win by two clear goals to win the tourney on points difference, Captain Campbell Johnstone scored an early goal and then had one disallowed in controversial circumstances with the referee unsighted. Convinced that we were going to do an Andy Murray, (our last tourney win was 25 years ago), the minutes counted down. With a little over 60 seconds to go, we were awarded a penalty. The surprisingly large crowd hushed as Campbell set the ball, walked away from goal, turned, took a short run-up and calmly stroked the ball into the back of the net. "They think it's all over....it is now!"....with seconds remaining, midfield dynamo Rhonagh Douglas broke forward to slam a cracking shot at goal which was parried by the 6th Leith keeper, who in spite of the scoreline had performed superbly, the ball falling at the feet of Captain Fantastic who drove home into the bottom left to seal a memorable victory. The hooter went and I broke down in front of the camera, thanking my Mum and Dad and Baden Powell for this great moment. Ahem.....
The only disappointment is a Leith Scout troop taking the field with two players wearing Rangers strips...Willie Ormond will be spinning in his grave.
Lovely weather today, time enough for a cycle down to Vicky Baths for a swim with Owen and Nancy. BTW, check out LLCoolJim's conversation with Red on my blip on Friday; those boys talk sense.
