Lacock Abbey

Yesterday we travelled down (in the rain) to my sister's, near Gloucester. Today, we went across to visit Roger's sister Pamela and husband Mike. After coffee at their home, we drove to the village of Lacock and the Abbey. Lacock village is famous for its picturesque streets and historic buildings and is widely used these days as a TV and film location for period dramas. The Abbey is actually now a country house of various architectural styles, built upon the foundations of a former nunnery. The cloisters remain much as they were and give a sense of the Abbey's monastic past. The Abbey too has been used as a film location, notably in a couple of the Harry Potter movies. There is also a small museum celebrating the achievements of former Lacock resident, William Henry Fox Talbot, famous for his contributions to the invention of photography. Both the Abbey and the village are now in the hands of the National Trust.
