A Wonderful Day
I took D3 to her placement in West London today and then spent the day in Southall. This is a very Indian/Pakistani areas of London, the people, the shops and restaurants, the smells and the sounds all very Asian and very exciting. I mooched around the High Street and into an Indian Supermarket, looking at packages I did not understand, Fruit and Vegetables that I had never seen before and listened to the piped music. Fascinating and annoying because I am so ignorant of the world around me. Found an Indian taxi bus, the only one in the country I was told, all painted up with decorations, paintings, bells and lights everywhere.
Also found the Grand Union Canal, the Hanwell flight of lochs, the very long wall for the old Hanwell Asylum and loads of water birds.
So what is the picture?
Well at one point on the canal there is a road going over it on a Cast Iron bridge. At exactly the same point there is a railway line going under the Canal, the water being held up on a cast iron trough. These bricks are holding up the road. Further down from this point the bricks are holding up the canal. If I had not seen it I would not have believed it. Needless to say it was Isambard Kingdom Brunel?s idea and design. It is alternatively known as Three Bridges or Windmill Lane Bridge and was the last big thing he did finishing in 1859. That makes it 151 years old and it still looks pretty good.
A good day, came back with a bottle of Bang Bang Chilli dipping sauce and a bag of rice, bit like coming home from a school trip
