Lighthouses; Ile d'Aix

In the bay near to La Rochelle sits Ile d'Aix a twenty minute ferry ride from Fouras. this fortified island was part of the Napoleonic coastal defences which included the famous Fort Boyard. This was also the last piece of French soil Napoleon stood on before his exile by the allies on St.Helena.

It's a brilliant day out; nice beaches, oyster beds, a few restaurants and you can cycle or walk round the whole island very easily.
