Day 14: Slash and Burn
We saw many fields like this where the forest had been freshly burned. They grow corn for three years until the soil is exhausted, then the cattle take over. The cattle are turned into dog food for North American dogs. Surely there must be a better way? Will we burn it all up before we figure it out?
I understand now that a lecture isn't the answer but finding a way for people to live and live well while preserving nature is the only way for a sustainable future. This was so hard and difficult to see but I couldn't ignore it.
End of digression.
We sadly hugged Roxie goodbye. I hope I see her again.
After a 4 hour bus ride we arrived in Belize City where we caught a water taxi to Ambergris Caye, a tropical island paradise. This was the last leg of our trip.
Belize City was another town like you read about or see in movies. But people helped us to book the ferry and helped us to find really yummy street food and appearances are not always what they seem.
The boat ride was an hour and a half of turquoise water, mangrove covered islands and magnificent frigatebirds. I'm in heaven again!
