Day 15: Swimming with Sharks
The title is accurate. But I don't have a waterproof camera, so no picture.
We arranged to go snorkeling at the reef. The reef is offshore and you have to take a tour. One of the areas is a marine reserve where the sharks and stingrays gather to feed on the fishermen's castoffs. They aren't people eating sharks but still swimming with sharks was a wonderful experience.
I love the ocean. Love, love, love it. The water was warm and the coral and fish were exquisite. This was the first time I had seen soft coral. The purple sea fans undulated in the current, bright fish hovered....it was over way too fast.
San Pedro (yes, the San Pedro of the Madonna song "La Isla Bonita") was a 15 minute bike ride from our guest house. It was pretty small and full of touristy shops but with a Belizian flavour.
In Belize, signs and ads are handpainted. I loved these because it was obvious that they weren't done by professional designers. This was one of my favourites. So hand made (pun intended)!
