From the North

M/S Pikkuföri (aka M/S Karjala)

I went to Turku and during my little trip there I spotted Föri. Pikkuföri, or simply Föri, is a little ferry that crosses the River Aurajoki many times a day (without a timetable). The trip from side to the other side lasts 1,5 minutes and is a simple way to cross the river because there's a long part of the riverside without bridges.

Föri of Turku is the only municipal ferry in the whole Finland. The original Föri was built in 1903 and it started its work in 1904 with a steam engine. In 1953 Föri got a diesel engine and cars were allowed to enter it no more. Today Föri is very popular among walkers, bicyclist and tourists. M/S Pikkuföri was built in 1975.

In time the name Föri has become known among common people. The name Föri has two alternative origins; the Swedish word färja or the English word ferry. This year M/S Pikkuföri got a brand new name, M/S Karjala (Eng. Karelia), to make honour to the lost Karelia and the soldiers who died or lost there during the World War II. I think that's very something - something little but yet something.
