Sitting on the Fence
There's no point sitting on the fence, so when at the pub quiz last night one of the questions was: With which sport is Gemma Spofforth associated? And David wrote down swimming I said no way! If she was a swimmer I'd have heard of her, bet she's a cricketer or footballer, but David stuck to his guns. Then on the question: How many matches were played at the 2010 World Cup finals? I said leave it to me I'll work it out - I do maths. Mmmmm, sometimes maybe it is better to sit on the fence.
Having scaled the dizzy heights of the winner's podium last week, we failed to worry the prize money this week getting fourteen questions wrong (only eight last week). See whether you could have improved our score:
1. There was a runaway engineering train on which London Underground line?
2. Who hosts TV's Magic Numbers in which viewers whose phone numbers contain two of the digits generated from six games can win up to £250,000?
3. Infiniti is a premium car brand produced by which manufacturer?
4. Which is the hottest planet in our solar system?
5. Which county won the t20 final on Saturday?
6. In the US, rye whiskey must be distilled from a fermented mash containing a minimum of what percent rye?
7. Name either of the actresses who portrayed Cher's daughters in the 1990 film Mermaids?
8. Which Elephant and Castle tower block was last week awarded the Building Design Carbuncle Cup, an annual award for the UK's ugliest building?
9. Which Hall and Oates song begins: "My friends wonder why I call you all the time, what can I say. I don't feel the need to give some secrets away. You think maybe I need help, no I know I'm right, alright, I'm just better off not listening to friends advice. When they insist on knowing my bliss I tell them this, when they want to know what the reason is I only smile when I lie and I tell them"?
10. An annual Cherry Stone Spitting contest has been staged since 1989 in Saint-Aubin in which European country?
11. Who had a 2010 hit entitled We No Speak Americano?
12. In which film series did Dana Carvey portray a character called Garth?
13. How many matches were played at the 2010 World Cup finals?
14. Who succeeded Ruth Watson as TV's The Hotel Inspector?
For those as ignorant as me (there must be someone out there) Gemma Spofforth took the gold medal in the 100-metre backstroke at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, in a world record time of 58.12 seconds and last week won gold in the European Championships in Budapest at 100-metre backstroke and silver at 200-metre backstroke, plus a gold in the 4x100m medley relay after the Russian team were disqualified for an illegal changeover.
And now the plug for Andrew (who's good enough to email me the above so's I don't have to type them out:
The quiz is well & enjoyably run by Andrew and as his website says "If you're in London, Essex, Herts, Beds or Bucks - Want to hold a quiz event but can't find a quiz master? - Want a fun evening?" Then give him a call.
