Reculver & Richborough

This is a shot of the Reculver Towers, at, you guessed it, Reculver. To get here we had to trail through some rather grotty small north coast towns. When we reached this place, it was covered with loads of facilities, even a restaurant! And we resorted to eating at Asda before getting there. Though actually that was surprisingly good... best cheesecake ever... mm... cheesecake...

Anyway! Yes. The ruins are pretty much as you see them. We somehow managed to squeeze about 40 minutes of visiting out of the place, not sure how. We also got attacked by flying beetles. LOADS of them. We don't have those in Sussex.

Then we went on to Richborough Castle (actually an ancient Roman fort). That was weird too; tucked away in the back of beyond, we have no idea how anyone ever finds it (behind a corn field!). Nonetheless it was manned, with a gift shop (of course). This place was pretty incredible; it's actually a reasonably intact Roman wall (and about 15 ft thick, with loads of the original detail!). The story is pretty amazing too: the place was actually a giant port town originally, the Roman gateway into Britain (100AD equivalent of Heathrow airport), with a giant monument which marked the start of the Roman road to Londinium. Yet another place that used to have the sea lapping right up to it.
