My dad's a mechanic. When I was at school, he would compel me to get a decent education so I didn't have to work with my hands. He'd show me his, cut up, swollen, filled with welding shrapnel.

I don't think I needed to see his scars to know that I wasn't cut out for a physically knackering line of work - besides, he's endured far worse, longer-term damage from his trade than sore paws.

Now, though, I see these more as a measure of his skill and craft, almost a badge of honour. I'm sure he'd think this was taking the mick, mind.

Hopefully he'll be able to retire soon. As you can see, he's done his bit.
