A Thousand Eyes

November 2010

After a summer that, for reasons I don't understand (other than an awful lot of rain), brought these tiny frogs aplenty around our farm, we were hit with a sudden, early, wicked blizzard a couple of weeks back. The local media called it a "weather bomb". The storm passed as suddenly it arrived and today it's 17C and sunny.

But during the blizzard, the snow flew and the wind blew and together they formed 5 foot drifts in our yard. In an effort to shovel the drifts down to a manageable height (so the dog can't walk over the fence on them) I went out this afternoon armed with my little shovel. After a couple of scoops, I began uncovering frogs. Frog after frog after frog. I tried to avoid as many of them as I could, but really, I don't know if it matters. What do they do now?

This little guy (or gal - I don't know - I'm not good at frog sexing) lay in limbo in his block of shovelled snow until it melted away around him. He warmed up in the sun, and eventually hopped away.

God speed little frog.
