Caterpillar Club
This is a badge given to those whose lives have been saved by use of a parachute and who are now members of the Caterpillar Club
This one belonged to my Uncle Alf who was a navigator in a Halifax Bomber, during a raid in 1944 the plane was badly damaged and the crew were ordered to bail out, Alf froze and was 'helped' out by his crewmates.
His parachute worked but he was shot at suffering injuries to his nose and eye, captured by the Germans he spent the rest of the war as a POW.
I think this is a fitting blip for today, as although he survived the war. He and many thousands like him who experienced unspeakable terrors, suffered for the rest of their lives.
We owe them all so much.
