La Crotz del Lengadoc / La Croix du Languedoc

The symbol of the Languedoc and of Occitania, the large area of most of southern France where Occitan is the indigenous language, even if it is not still widely used. There are various interpretations of the design - it is thought that initially the twelve circles around the cross represented the division of the solar year into signs of the zodiac. Later, it was adopted by the Cathars who saw it as representing the twelve apostles. Now it can be seen all across the Midi, on doorways as it is here, on commercial logos and on the Occitan flag.

A rather gloomy day, so I took some photos in one of the streets that doesn't get much light on any day.
