Bird help

Can anyone identify this little bird? It hangs around outside my back door but tends to disappear the minute I open it, making the bird very difficult to photograph. It never goes near the feeders or the other birds and I have never seen it in the trees. It seems to be living off the bread and cheese that I leave in the yard. I would love to be able to get a decent photograph of it and will, perhaps, try again tomorrow.

P.S. My sore throat is easing up but I am full of a cold. I am not going to complain about the weather because although it is bitterly cold here, we haven't got much snow.
