Breaking the ice

That's what happened here.
From time to time that has to be done.
As from 1965 the canals around the city of Groningen were part of the cooling cirquit of the former "Hunze power plant".
So it was not possible to skate in those years.
About 12 years ago the plant was demolished.

So now they have to brake the ice....
Here's a view at the so-called "Hoge der Aa", the canal is the start of the "Reitdiep" that ends at Zoutkamp in the north of the province of Groningen.
The "Mars", seen in the foreground is also a regular visitor at the island of Terschelling but has now retired in Groningen during the winter.

The day started sunny but when we did some shopping in the city the sky turned into grey and snow started falling down.
