From the Ground Up
This is the very start of one of the smaller sculptures that dot the city. I imagine the larger ones are done the same way.
The first layer of ice is put down to get everything level. The next layer includes the first row of lights. These two guys are 'electricians'. They are putting in the initial wiring. You can see where the groove has been cut for the fluro lights to go and you can see along the side the green tubes that will be lit when the sculpture is finished. After a row of 'bricks' is layed, they cut/scrape the groove for the lights.
During the festival there are hundreds of these (and snow scultures) all over the city.
This pic was taken on Zhang Yang Da Jie. We call it "Walking Street" or "Central Street" it is a walking mall that goes for about 10 city blocks.
