Kathakali

One of the great theatrical spectacles in Kerala is that of the Kathakali dancers. We went to see a short performance in Fort Kochin tonight. The theatre was literally opposite our hotel. It was small but there was a fascinating museum attached to it, explaining all the history and significance.

First we watched the makeup artist applying the flour and water paste to build up the layers of shape on the face. Then the dancer finished his own makeup using coloured face paints.
