Too Good to Burn

Why is it that we deem some things too good for their primary use?

For example, soap. You know, the type of soap that's carved into a pretty shape? That can't possibly be used as soap, it must simply sit in the bathroom and be admired by guests. Eventually it turns into a mucky, stinking mess and has to be thrown away, having served no purpose whatsoever.

Take these candles, for example. Pretty little tea lights with butterflies on top. Oh no, they can't be burnt! Why on earth not? Burn 'em, I say!

If I want to wear my "best" dress down the street to buy some milk, I will. And I'll wear my wellies too while I'm at it.
