inspired by the peace poppy
Women from the Midland Co-operative Society were busy making these at the Co-operatives United exhibition yesterday.
The white poppy for peace made its first appearance on Armistice Day in 1933. The idea had been taken up by the Co-operative Women's guild. It was not intended as an insult to those who died in the First World War - a war in which many of the white poppy supporters lost husbands, brothers, sons and lovers - but a challenge to the continuing drive to war. Its aim is to promote debate and rally support for resistance to war. It represents a commitment to work for a world where conflicts will be resolved without violence and with justice.
Like the red poppy, it should be worn thoughtfully.
