In many of today's cultures, it is okay for a woman to propose marriage to a man. Society doesn't look down on such women. However, that hasn't always been the case.

When the rules of courtship were stricter, women were only allowed to pop the question on one day every four years. That day was February 29th.



So we had a snowless February, a record, but it's snowing today, the 29th, that extra Leap Year day, so there goes the record.

I had a great walk by the ocean with friends yesterday, in Scituate, Massachusetts, about 25 minutes from here. It was a gorgeous afternoon with the smell of salt over the tidal marsh and ocean. We walked along the marsh and then drove on to a small point near the Scituate Lighthouse . The little cottages on the Damon's Point are wonderful and have to be very hearty. So many coastal storms and flood tides have damaged them, especially the Blizzard of '78.
