New Shambles

If I ever write my autobiography, I will have a chapter entitled "New shambles". (Although, to be honest, I think could probably use it more than once.)

I love the word shambles. Whilst not exactly onomatopoeic, it it conjures up a image for me that no other word can capture. "How's the bathroom coming along?" "It's a shambles." It's just perfect, isn't it?

This narrow street in Kendal is called New Shambles and I must have walked along it hundreds of times. I like it much more than a "regular" street, designed for cars, with pedestrians relegated to the side. This seems more quintessentially Kendal to me that the main street with its Boots and WHSmith and Next and blah blah blah.
