Between fen and mountains

The Catalan Chemin de Saint Compostelle

Today, we walked on part of the chemin de Compostelle. It took us above the village of Catllar to the Hermitage of Sant Jaume et Saint Jaques de Calaons. We continue to climb through the burnt vegetation of the fire we witnessed last week, past orris and a dolmen. Orris were mostly used as storm and night shelters by shepherds and cowherds after sheep and cows were moved to higher ground for grazing in the summer. We walked for four and a half hours, 10 kilometres with 530 metres of ascent. It was a shame that the mist and low cloud did not clear, otherwise the views would have been wonderful.
