Waimakariri Gorge Bridge

This is the bridge I was standing on when I took my first blip. Then the river was in flood. The place I stood to take this shot was in the middle of torrent back then.

The bridge was completed in 1877. It was called the Ferry Bridge because it was erected close to the place where the ferry plied. In its early years it was a rail bridge, carrying the long gone tramway between Oxford and Sheffield. Now it is a part of the Scenic Highway that runs along the foothills. It is also an important inland link between North and Central Canterbury.

The bridge has only one lane and it carries a lot of heavy traffic. While I was standing on it today I had some bad moments as a large truck hauling a massive digger passed over. The sticky-out bits came within about a foot of me.
