Wryneck
Okay so yesterday's blip was a bit on the boring side, but no comments! - even abuse would be welcome.
So today we have a wryneck - hands up the smarties who actually know what a wryneck is.
This morning we decided we'd be going out for a bird watching day (for a change!). Didn't know where to go, so had a look on t'interweb to see what's around and came across a posting on a wryneck just above Wendover. It was "found" yesterday and was still around this morning and was said to be "showing extremely well". So armed with directions we headed off to see whether we could find this bird that neither of us had ever seen before.
Having found the appropriate parking spot we headed off on the Ridgeway path. We then spied a group of birders and headed in their direction. Looking through our binoculars we initially failed to find the wryneck until Lee, the author of the web posting, suggested we'd be better off just using our eyes.
Over the next couple of hours we came to realise what "showing extremely well" meant as the bird wandered round giving us great views, sometimes no more than ten feet away. It really was quite an idyllic day, not only superb views of the wryneck, but we were high up in the Chilterns basking in warm sunshine with splendid views of the surrounding countryside. As we left I thanked Lee for the information and asked whether this was a typical day - he smiled.
Admire it in LARGE.
