For Whom the Bell Tolls
Grade B listed Mount Alvernia in Lasswade Road was the Convent of the Poor Clare Colettines (modified by St Colette, 1381-1447). Colettines follow a rigorous rule; they are enclosed, fast, abstain from meat, are discalced, (barefoot or wearing sandals) and possess no property, not even in common.
When it closed in 1992, due to falling numbers of sisters, the Catholic Church wanted to exhume the bodies of 24 nuns to allow for development of the site. When the council granted the planning application in Dec 1998, it made a condition that the graves should remain and that they must be maintained.
It is reputed that in Sept 2000 the headstones of the nuns were uplifted and stored against a wall.
I have yet to verify this but I might take a look after work.
