Sampras vs. Agassi

For a bit of nostalgia, I went to see Agassi vs Sampras and McEnroe vs Lendl at Madison Square Garden with a friend. Oddly, after a Rangers game earlier in the month, that makes 2 trips to MSG this month.

The event was a bit depressing really, though perhaps I should have known that going in. Even before they started playing tennis, a pharmaceutical company shuttled out Gloria Gaynor to sing her hit "I Will Survive" to promote some drug. Gloria actually sounded pretty good given the circumstances, but it was pretty odd feeling.

That was followed up by McEnroe having to retire from his match against Lendl early due to a sprained ankle. The Sampras/Agassi match was a bit more entertaining since they can still move pretty well.

It would have helped if they'd hooked the players up with microphones, which I believe they do during some exhibition matches. Sampras you could tell was having fun and talking to some of the fans in the first few rows, but it was lost on me and the other 16,960 or so other fans there.
