VACATION EYES

With her eyes half closed Mia fingered the keys of her saxaphone. The black case was open at her feet, coins sprinkled over the red velvet lining. She blew lilting sounds into the air of the subway station, liquid waves of Coleman and Coltrane. Her gaze was unfocused, but her attention was sharply attuned to the music. When she saw the envelope flutter down into the open case she looked up to see who may have dropped it, but the travelers were hurried and thick. Whoever had left the envelope was anonymous now among the passing crowd. The F train rolled into the station, drowning out Mia's alto. As the train's brakes screeched Mia reached down and lifted the envelope from the case. She slid her finger below the flap and tore at the white paper. Inside were two cards. She withdrew the first, a "Get Out Of Jail Free" card from a Monopoly game. The other was a lottery ticket. On the back of the Monopoly card, in elegant script, were written the words: "I won't be needing this." The lottery ticket was already "scratched," the hidden numbers revealed. She noted the five "Winning Numbers" on the top of the card, and the five others below. The bells and cherries and lemons that once covered them were only raggedly evident. The numbers all matched. Along the top edge of the card, printed across a waving American flag and two bald eagles holding arrows in their talons, were the words: MATCH ALL FIVE NUMBERS AND WIN A MILLION DOLLARS.
