Global Warming
On 26 December 2004 there was a tsunami which ravaged Sri Lanka's coastline. A lot of people died, and buildings were washed away.
Since then, although the people have bounced back, it is still a scar in their psyche.
Here, at Unawatuna beach, you could walk out onto a wide sandy beach from these restaurants, even AFTER the tsunami.
In the last 5 years, friends tell me, they have lost more and more beach.
Now you can't even walk from Sun and Sea on the one end of the bay to the temple end. You have to go behind onto the road to get to the other end of the beach. The water is so high.
These beachfront restaurateurs are literally waiting for their livelihoods to be washed away.
