Dead Furry Thing
There was something strange and furry lying in the middle of the lawn this morning. Got the binoculars out and none the wiser except it was definitely furry and definitely dead. Took a couple of photos before disposing of the body and looked up my natural history of Britain book - it was a Polecat, but we don't get Polecats in Hertfordshire according to my 1982 book.
So I googled it and found "Michael Clark describes, in his book on Mammals of Hertfordshire, that he released captive bred polecats in Hertfordshire in the 1980's and 90's. Eight were released at Tewin, five at Bramfield, five in Broxbourne woods and three at Essenden in 1981-2 and in 1992-4 a further seven at Watton-at-Stone, five at Ashridge and two in the Broxbourne Woods complex." Well one of their offspring has its final resting place in our garden.
So today's blip was either going to be a dead Polecat or Mrs Siskin having trouble unparking from the seed feeder. I took the executive decision that even with the inferences about lady drivers you'd prefer Mrs Siskin. If you would like to see her slightly more composed you'd better visit RCB's Siskin blip.
