The one that got away
There is a little park, not far away, that I go to to practise photographing little birds. In this park there is a large man-made pond, well stocked with koi carp, some of which are enormous. There is also a little pavilion where visitors are invited to feed the fish. As soon as anyone appears on this deck, the heron flies in and stands waiting. No-one seems to realise that they are luring the fish to their death, as they thrash around eating the fish food or the bread that is on offer. However, someone has placed five strands of quite loose wire in front of the pavilion to discourage fish eating wildlife. It certainly works, as this heron became tangled in the wire, and while extricating himself, he dropped the fish, who made good his escape. The bird is obviously used to this scenario, and quite unfazed by his experience, as he settled back and waited for the fish to return, which they failed to do, while I was there! In the interest of art, and the sensibilities of those who like birds better than fish, I removed the wire from the picture.
