I pass this memorial on the way to 1 Whitehall Place and had vaguely assumed it commemorated the Parachute Regiment and perhaps Arnhem. A double-take and a closer look at the cap badges confirmed a nagging suspicion that I had made the wrong assumption.
The statue dates from 2000 and depicts the five crew members of a WW2 Comet tank. It was created by George Henry Paulin. The men wear the cap badge of the Royal Tank Regiment.
The occasion for my visit was a luncheon talk on 'Submarine engineering'; I was looking for people who had served in the navy in the last great conflict who potentially might be willing to reminisce on record.
