The Incinerator at Newhaven, East Sussex

Because landfill sites are almost exhausted both Brighton and Hove City and East Sussex County Councils jointly decided they had a need for an incinerator. However despite the objections by residents the decision was made to built the thing at Newhaven, in fact in meetings, consultations and petitions only one person was in favour, so much for democracy.
It would appear that very little joined up thinking was applied to the decision process. It is sited with a few hundred metres from houses, any emissions will be spread over a large are since the prevailing wind is from the South West. Furthermore all vehicles will need to exclusively use the road in the foreground, a road which is frequently closed for long periods because of RTAs. It is anticipated that there will be up to 90 movements in each direction Mondays to Saturdays, a request to have between between 60 and 70 on a Sunday instead of the 10 allowable in the original planning. Each movement will need to transverse a railway level crossing used by 4 trains an hour in each direction. Road chaos and gridlocking is inevitiable. Why, if Newhaven was the only viable site disused land in the harbour area was not considered is beyond us all, as was the need to us road transport. They should have seriouly considered using rail freight from a number of railheads using the existing network which passing the present site and also goes into the harbour area..
